Mode Overview and Access
Select School of Nightmares from the lobby mode list separate from main hotel chapter progression. Progress may not carry story flags back to hotel Chapter 2 — treat it as parallel content for variety and unique cosmetics.
Objectives echo hotel floors: collect keys, solve classroom puzzles, retrieve ofuda analogs (sometimes labeled spirit seals), and bait the entity across hall tiles.
School Map Layout
Key zones:
- Main hallway — Long locker-lined corridor; primary hunt pathing.
- Classrooms — Item spawns behind desks and teacher podiums.
- Science wing — Visual puzzle rooms similar to doll or ritual tables.
- Courtyard connector — Short outdoor segment with fewer hide spots — cross quickly.
Spray paint marks are extremely valuable here; school symmetry creates infinite déjà vu loops.
Hunt Variants and Hiding
The school entity uses PETAPETA's audio kit but with shorter pre-hunt grace after picking up seal items. Lockers function like wardrobes — enter when screen reddens, exit only after audio fully calms.
Courtyard transitions trigger forced chases on some patches; sprint with onigiri ready. Party poppers work unless event modifiers disable them — read event banners in lobby.
Cursed Shards and Skill Tree
Unlike main hotel floors, School of Nightmares tracks permanent upgrades via Cursed Shards:
- Shards spawn in almost every classroom — loot lobby shards before each run.
- Skill tree unlocks stamina buffs, PETAPETA stun abilities, shard capacity, auto-loot, and difficulty modes.
- Hard mode (3,000 Shards) — faster PETAPETA, +50% shard earnings per run.
- Super Hard mode (3,000 Shards) — maximum danger, doubles shard payouts (e.g. 150 → 300).
Upgrade shard capacity before stun nodes — starving early runs slows progression. See our dedicated School of Nightmares Skills guide.
Rewards and Replay Value
School of Nightmares awards Zeni and exclusive cosmetic flair on first clears. Speedrun communities route classroom wings clockwise to minimize courtyard exposure.
For hotel veterans, difficulty feels between Level 4 and Level 5 — key hunts plus tight halls. New players should clear hotel Level 3 minimum before attempting school content.
