Level 1 Objectives at a Glance
When the floor loads, your HUD lists four tasks in order:
- Find the Key — Spawns in a recognizable room with three adjacent wardrobes/closets.
- Find the Box — Hidden in the room with upside-down stacked tables.
- Open the Box — Equip the key (hotbar slot 1 by default) and hold E on the box.
- Place the Ofuda — Complete the exorcism in the main corridor.
There is no upper floor, no safe dial puzzle, and no consumable requirement. Use this level to memorize how hunt audio escalates and which wardrobes you can reach within two seconds of a red screen.
Finding the Key
The key almost always spawns in the three-closet room — a guest room where three tall wardrobes sit side by side along one wall. Search systematically:
- Check behind each closet door; the key can sit on the floor or on a low shelf.
- Look under the central table if the room has one; spawns occasionally clip under furniture.
- Listen for the soft pickup chime when you walk over the key if lighting is poor.
If you pass a room with only one or two closets, keep moving. Level 1's key room is distinctive enough that veteran players identify it within seconds. Spray paint from the shop can mark the door, but most first-time clears do not need paid items.
Once picked up, the key auto-equips or occupies your first hotbar slot. The HUD objective ticks forward to finding the box.
Locating and Opening the Box
The locked box spawns in the upside-down table room. Look for a chamber where wooden tables are stacked inverted against the wall or ceiling area — a visual gimmick unique to Level 1's box spawn pool.
Search behind the stacked tables carefully; the box is deliberately tucked where a quick glance fails. When you find it, remember the route back to the hallway because you will return after PETAPETA begins hunting.
To open:
- Press the number key for your key if it is not already equipped.
- Approach the box and hold E until the lid animation completes.
- Collect the ofuda — your first exorcism talisman.
Picking up the ofuda triggers PETAPETA's active hunt phase for this floor. Footsteps, screen flicker, and distant howls mean the spirit is now patrolling corridors. You are no longer exploring at leisure.
Exorcism Ritual and Hunt Survival
Move to the main hallway — the long corridor connecting most guest rooms. Equip the ofuda and aim at floor tiles until the placement ghost turns green. This indicates a valid exorcism line PETAPETA will cross during patrol.
- Place the ofuda with left mouse or E depending on your platform.
- Step behind the paper relative to the direction PETAPETA approaches — you want the spirit to walk over the charm, not see you standing beside it.
- If the screen reddens before placement finishes, abort and dive into the nearest wardrobe. Resume placement during calm seconds between patrols.
When PETAPETA crosses the ofuda, a burst effect plays and the level completes. You receive Zeni and unlock Level 2 in the lobby progression.
Pro tips: Do not sprint constantly — stamina is limited even on Level 1. Practice hiding only when red static appears, not on every sound. Identify two wardrobes on your route to the hallway so you never panic-run into a dead-end room.
