How to Survive PETAPETA

Surviving PETAPETA is less about outrunning the spirit forever and more about reading audiovisual hunt cues, choosing wardrobes before you need them, and never wasting stamina on exploration sprints. This guide covers the full survival loop from Level 1 through Chapter 2 — the skills Omochi Studio assumes you learned before Level 4 doll hunts.

Understanding Hunt Phases

PETAPETA is not constantly chasing you. Early exploration on each floor is calm until story triggers — usually picking up the ofuda or completing mid-floor rituals — activate patrol AI. Learn three audio tiers:

  • Tier 1 — Distant — Low howls, faint footsteps, minor screen flicker. Keep moving; do not hide yet.
  • Tier 2 — Proximity — Footsteps loud enough to directionally locate. Identify nearest wardrobe path without sprinting.
  • Tier 3 — Hunt — Screen red, static shake, screaming stinger. Enter wardrobe immediately; standing in rooms fails.

Hiding too early wastes objective time; hiding too late kills you before wardrobe doors close. Tier 3 is the only mandatory hide trigger for beginners.

Wardrobe Rules That Save Runs

Wardrobes and lockers are invulnerable hide spots when hunt UI is active. Rules:

  • Only wardrobes work — beds, corners, and crouching do nothing.
  • Stay inside until red fully fades and footsteps recede; early exit catches instant kills on Level 3+ circle-back AI.
  • Pre-plan two wardrobes per objective room so you never panic into dead ends.
  • In co-op, separate wardrobes — sharing one closet bugs on some patches.

Level 6 chase finale has no wardrobe safety during sprint segments — this guide focuses on standard hotel floors where hiding dominates.

Stamina, Sprint, and Onigiri

Hold Shift to sprint until stamina depletes, then walk to regenerate. Sprinting everywhere leaves you helpless when Tier 3 hits far from closets.

Onigiri from the shop boosts max stamina temporarily — sizes vary (small to large). Buy before Level 4+ where patrol frequency spikes. Sneakers increase dash speed separately and stack well with onigiri for Level 6 finale chases.

Party poppers freeze PETAPETA briefly — excellent for safe dial entry on Level 2–5, useless on Level 6 where disabled.

Exorcism Without Dying

After opening the box, place ofuda on green hallway tiles and stand behind the charm relative to spirit approach vector. Common deaths:

  • Placing ofuda while hunted — finish hide first, place during calm.
  • Standing beside instead of behind — line-of-sight kills bypass ofuda protection.
  • Abandoning placement early — wait for full exorcism VFX before celebrating.

Practice Level 1 repeatedly until Tier 3 hides feel automatic — every later floor is harder versions of the same survival grammar.

Frequently Asked Questions

When exactly should I hide?
When the screen turns red with static and hunt audio peaks — Tier 3 cues. Do not hide on distant sounds alone.
Can PETAPETA see me in a room?
Yes if you are not in a wardrobe. Rooms offer no passive stealth during hunts.
Does sprinting attract PETAPETA?
Not directly, but empty stamina prevents reaching wardrobes when hunts trigger unexpectedly.
Do party poppers replace hiding?
No. Poppers buy time for puzzles; hunts still require wardrobes on most floors when poppers are on cooldown or disabled.
